Title: A for Antarctica
Author: Jonathan Chester
Publisher: Tricycle Press
Date: 1994
Summary: Takes the reader on an pictoral tour of Antarctica illustrating objects beginning with each letter of the alphabet. Each object includes a brief description.
Review: From Amazon.com "Since this is not an alphabet book in the usual sense--" Aurora australis" is way beyond the primer stage--the letters are simply a linking device for photos of Antarctica that were taken by Chester during his several polar explorations. Indeed, the pictures are excellent, even showing surprising flashes of humor and fun. Antarctic wildlife and equipment used by contemporary explorers pop up in the many pictures, with each photo keyed to a letter of the alphabet and described in a brief caption. An orientation map would have helped readers locate the various places mentioned, such as Mount Minto and the Antarctic Peninsula, but even without one, Chester's book turns the frozen desert into something magical and alive."
Title: My Season with Penguins: an Antarctica Journal
Author: Sophie Webb
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin
Date: 2000
Summary: Describes the author's two-month stay in Antarctica to study and draw penguins. Webb gives readers a vivid, frank, firsthand account of what it is like to spend a season in a land not yet affected by people yet populated for centuries by true dwellers of the Antarctic: the fearless, round-bellied, pink-footed, gliding, diving, utterly adept Adelie penguins.
Review: From Amazon.com "Sophie Webb has applied her wonderful drawings to a travel log of her trip to the Cape Royds penguin colony on Ross Island, Antactica. Her drawings of the penguins in all their various activities are wonderfully accurate and delightful. She also recounts her experiences traveling to Antactica in a way that makes it very real -- I should know, I was there with her! The book is very well suited to kids as well as adults. However, note that she is quite truthful about some of the various fates that can await less fortunate penguins! Sophie has done a great job with this book."

1) D Crafts for Kids - the penguin shuffle
With penguins, it is the dad's job to keep the unhatched egg from rolling off the rocky cliffs where the birds nest. For weeks, he carries the egg on top of his feet.
Here's a fun indoor race that you can do with some friends, penguin style.
You'll need a beanbag or Hacky Sack-style foot bag to serve as an egg.
Stand side by side with their "eggs" on top of their feet.
When the race begins, shuffle across the room without dropping your eggs.
The first one to succeed wins.
